Assessment

Assessment is the process of determining whether learning objectives have been met. Assessment is an essential component of of instructional design. Important assessment terms can be found in the assessment glossary.

Objectives

The first step in creating instruction is setting learning objectives. These are the same objectives that are used in assessment

There are two types of instructional objectives, general instructional objectives (GIO) and specific learner outcomes (SLO).

General Instructional Objective (GIO)

Specific Learner outcomes (SLO)
- you will always have multiple SLOs for each GIO.
SLOs are "indicator behaviors" - no one of them by themselves is sufficient, but together they provide evidence that the GIO has been acheived. SLOs are not prerequisite behaviors for the GIO (that would be a different GIO).

  • Comprehensiveness
  • Congruency with societal values and prescribed school functions
  • Psychological soundness
  • Practical utility
  • Feasibility
  • Consistency
  • Completeness

Selected Response
choosing from options provided, such as multiple-choice, matcing, alternative response (true/false, yes/no, and any other binary choice questions)
